The flu season has us firmly in its grasp. I think all of us know someone who has suffered from the influenza bug this year. According to Centers for Disease control, the 2012-13 flu season is one of the worst the United States has seen in recent years. For those of you who chose not to get a flu shot, all is not lost. There are still plenty of ways to protect guard yourself from getting ill.

The first thing doctors recommend is what mom has known for years. Wash your hands thoroughly. They recommend reciting the ABC’s in your head just to be sure that you have washed long enough to kill germs and bacteria. Additionally, it is important to get plenty of rest and be sure to eat a balanced diet and include foods that boost the body’s natural immunities

At tera’swhey® we also recommend that people include whey protein as part of their immunity boosting routine. The US Dairy Export Council reports that many individuals who regularly consume whey protein have experienced improved immunity and shortened periods of infirmity. One reason for this is that whey protein concentrates, such as tera’swhey®, dramatically raises glutathione (GSH) levels, a key antioxidant which is tied directly to the body’s ability to fight off illnesses. In essence whey protein gives your body a front line defense against illness such as influenza and it keeps your immune cells primed and ready for action.

While tera’swhey® protein powder is not a 100 percent defense against all illnesses, it is a great way to give your body a fighting chance at good health. With that in mind, we wish you a healthy flu season. But if you do end up coming down with the flu, remember to give your body time to rest and recover and then arm yourself with tera’swhey® when you feel better!

-be well. be vibrant

At tera’swhey® we pride ourselves on developing healthy and flavorful whey protein powder formulations. With that in mind, it is no surprise that our Organic Bourbon Vanilla and Organic Fair Trade Dark Chocolate formulas are among our most popular flavors. However, we also strive to find unique flavors that set us apart from other whey protein powders on the market.

The rBGH Free Acai Whey Protein Powder is one such flavor that differentiates tera’swhey® from the rest. The acai berry has received a lot of media attention for its health benefits in recent years, but we have found that that some of our consumers still have reservations about trying this unique flavor.

Unlike traditional berries (like a strawberry or raspberry) that are grown on a bush, the acai berry grows in a palm tree in the Amazonian forests of South America. The berries develop in groups of up to a dozen and are found on the base of the palm leaves. At harvest time, they are dark in color and about the size of a grape.

When asked to describe the flavor of the acai berry, people provide many different answers. Some note that there is a certain bitterness to the fruit, similar to black licorice. While others say it has a delicate flavor that tastes like a cross between a blackberry and raspberry with a dark chocolate aftertaste. Because of its mildness, many tera’swhey® customers utilize the acai berry flavor as a base for smoothies and other healthful drinks.

The acai berry is touted for its health benefits because it is high in both anthocyanins and flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants that boost the body’s natural immunities. Research also suggests that these antioxidants aid the body’s cell protection system and lessen the effects of aging and disease.

So that’s the lowdown on this mysterious super fruit. In a nutshell, tera’swhey® rBGH Free Aacai Whey Protein Powder is a unique flavor that is good for the body! But don’t take our word for it…let your taste buds decide!

tera’swhey® Almond Berry Smoothie

2 scoops tera’swhey® rBGH Free Acai Whey Protein Powder
½ cup non-fat milk
1 cup frozen berries (your choice)
1 tablespoon almond butter

Combine tera’swhey® Acai Whey Protein Powder and milk in a blender. Blend until smooth. Add frozen berries and almond butter and blend until mixture is thick and frothy. Serve in a tall glass and enjoy!

What do you think? Do you like our New and Improved Acai flavored whey protein? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

-be well. be vibrant

It’s that time of year again. The time when we make promises to ourselves to live healthy lives, lose weight, eat right, or spend more time with our family. It is encouraging to note that nearly two thirds of people who make resolutions stick with them for at least two months, however, only forty percent of people who make resolutions are able to do so on their first attempt.

Resolutions can be hard to keep simply because often they are a drastic change from our regularly formed habits. And while these changes can be good for us, sometimes the “cold turkey” approach can leave us longing for our past “bad habits.” So at tera’swhey® we would like to ask you to rethink the resolution. Instead of a huge life change, consider implementing small changes throughout the year. Makeover your bad habits little by little.

Starting in January, come up with one positive thing you can do for your health and well-being. Perhaps there is a yoga class that has piqued your interest, or maybe you want to take a 15 minute walk on your lunch hour, every other day. In February, you could choose to replace one unhealthy food in your diet with a healthy choice – Maybe instead of eating chocolate cake, have a rich and creamy Fair Trade Dark Chocolate tera’swhey® whey protein shake mixed with unsweetened almond milk!

Whatever you choose, the team at tera’swhey is here to help! Through the month of January, we’re offering 15% off product orders on our website! (www.teraswhey.com) We encourage you to take advantage of this deal and use tera’swhey to help makeover your bad habits.

Plan one positive change every month and before you know it, you will have an entire year of new habits! Do us a favor…let us know on our Facebook or Twitter page what habits you are starting each month, and keep us up to date on your progress. We would love to come along on your life changing journey! So for 2013, your challenge, and our hope for you is to – be well. be vibrant!

At tera’swhey®, we are known for our unique whey protein flavor blends. Not surprising, one of our most popular flavors centers around the ever popular taste of chocolate. However, unlike traditional chocolate protein powders, we of course added real Fair Trade Dark Chocolate into our whey protein powders. It has been described as decadent, rich and just delicious, especially when mixed with unsweetened almond milk, but still some confusion remains around what “Fair Trade” actually means. So, in today’s blog post we are going to clear up the confusion and let you know why Fair Trade is so important to us here at tera’swhey®.

According to the Fair Trade USA Website, “Fair Trade began modestly in the 1940s when a few small North American and European organizations reached out to poverty stricken communities to help them sell their handicrafts to well-off markets.” In a nutshell, the cocoa that is used in our Fair Trade Dark Chocolate whey protein powder is purchased from vendors in emerging markets. Our cocoa purchase allows them to help fund programs that will enhance social, economic and environmental projects in their communities.

You might be asking “what does that mean to me?” Basically, when you purchase products that are Fair Trade certified, you are doing your part to make this world a better place. You are feeding children, building infrastructure, encouraging better medical practices and helping these communities and nations become self-sufficient. You are making a difference!

We work hard to provide our consumers with the best tasting whey protein powders around…and whenever possible, we make sure that our products allow us to give back to the world around us. We are thrilled that our consumer are helping us in our efforts every time they enjoy a recipe that uses our Fair Trade Dark Chocolate whey protein powder!

Chocolate Chip Power Muffins
Ingredients:
1 scoop tera’swhey® Organic Fair Trade Dark Chocolate Protein Powder
1⁄2 cup applesauce
1 cup oats
2 cups oat flour
4 egg whites
1⁄2 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1⁄2 cup chopped dark chocolate pieces or dark chocolate chips

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease or line muffin tins. In a large bowl combine egg whites and yogurt. Add oats and oat flour and mix thoroughly. Add all remaining ingredients and blend together until the batter is a gooey consistency. If it is too thick add a small amount of water and remix until desired texture is achieved. Spoon batter into muffin cups filling 1/3 to ½. Bake muffins for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Yields 12 medium sized muffins.

As part of our quest to share tera’swhey® with the world, we regularly take part in expos and trade shows throughout the United States. During these events, we get to meet our consumers face to face and hear all the exciting ways our product has helped them start or to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We also get the distinct pleasure of introducing tera’swhey® to individuals who have not had the opportunity to taste the difference pure ingredients can make in a whey protein powder.

As we started thinking about all of the places we have been over the past year, we decided that it would be fun to take our blog readers along on our journeys and give them a behind the scenes peak as they go “out and about” with tera’swhey®. So, consider this the first installment of Out and About with tera’swhey® as we recap last month’s travels and look forward to our future endeavors.

Wine & Dine Wisconsin (Milwaukee – November 10 & 11)

This event really got our taste buds working overtime. Located in the beautiful Delta Airlines Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we were surrounded by all the goodness of the Dairy State. From gourmet specialty cheese producers, to delicious and robust micro-brewed beers and specialty wines (so we were told), the Wine & Dine Wisconsin was a treasure trove of delectable and unique specialty food options. At our booth, we were greeted by many of our loyal fans, but also were able to educate many discerning palettes about the delicious difference of our specialty whey protein powders. The Wine & Dine Wisconsin can be recapped in just one word – Delicious!

Brava Women’s Expo (Madison – November 16-17)

The Brava Women’s Expo in Madison is an annual event that features over 100 exhibits ranging from fashion and beauty to health and fitness. This year’s event was a great experience for the tera’swhey® team. We met so many exciting and inspirational individuals and were touched to learn about their journey with regard to leading a healthy life. People at the event were warm, open and were also very excited to learn more about tera’swhey® and how it could be incorporated into their lives. Our new flavors were again, very well received, with people taking a keen interest in our coffee flavor! All in all it was a wonderful event right in our backyard, in Madison, Wisconsin!

So where will tera’swhey® be next? We are taking the month of December off as consumers are in the holiday spirit, but will be out and about again in January! Come see us at:

Thanksgiving marks that special time of year when families join together to enjoy each other’s company and reflect on all the blessings in their lives. For us here at tera’swhey® the blessings are innumerable. We are so lucky to have such loyal consumers and also enjoy the camaraderie of our entire tera’swhey® team!

The other thing that Thanksgiving brings is an over abundance of delicious food…and many times extra calories. Consider these high calorie / high fat Thanksgiving favorites:

1 serving Turkey Gravy – 340 calories / 11g fat
1 serving Stuffing – 165 calories / 4g fat
1 serving mashed potatoes – 185 calories / 3g fat
1 slice pumpkin pie – 310 calories / 20g fat

While these are just ballpark estimates based on “average” serving sizes, it is safe to say that the calorie count of the typical Thanksgiving dinner can add up very quickly. It is also safe to say that the high protein turkey you will likely be gobbling up is probably one of the healthiest and lowest fat foods on your entire dinner menu.

Don’t get us wrong, we are not trying to put a damper on your festivities. But it is important for all of us to be aware of the high calories that are hiding in some of our holiday favorites. And with that in mind, we want to provide you a low fat twist on the traditional pumpkin pie (as you can see, it is one of the highest calorie parts of your entire meal). We hope it will serve as a means to get you thinking about creative ways to have your “turkey with all the trimmings and eat it too.”

Low Fat Pumpkin Pie – 210 calories / 5g fat (per slice) / Number of Servings: 10

1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin (about 2 cups)
1 (14-ounce) can fat free Sweetened Condensed Milk (NOT evaporated milk)

½ scoop tera’swhey® bourbon vanilla whey protein powder
6 egg whites
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

Pre-heat oven to 425°F. Press unbaked crust into a 9-inch pie plate and cut off any additional crust edges. Combine pumpkin, condensed milk, protein powder egg whites, spices and salt in medium bowl until smooth. Pour into crust. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F and continue baking 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted 1 inch from crust comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Refrigerate leftovers.
So, enjoy your time with family and friends, and keep in mind that you can enjoy all your favorite Thanksgiving foods – in moderation and with a bit of creative cooking.

Happy Thanksgiving from the entire tera’swhey® team!

Getting kids to eat healthy is a constant struggle for parents today. Many of us here at the tera’swhey® face this struggle on a daily basis and would love to offer a few ideas that might help you add a little extra nutrition to your child’s diet. Yes, you guessed it…it starts with including tera’swhey® as a part of your child’s healthy eating regime.

Protein is an important part of a child’s diet. It has been shown to aid in the growth and development of many vital biological systems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 to 35 percent of a person’s daily calorie intake should come from protein. With that in mind, it recommends that children ages one to three consume 13 g of protein per day, ages of four and eight, 19 g, ages 9 to 13, 34 g and teenagers from 46g to 52g (female – 46 and male 52).

With those facts in mind, you are probably thinking, “there is no way I am going to get my picky eater to gulp down that amount of any type of protein, let alone a protein shake.” Have you tried our Organic Fair Trade Dark Chocolate whey protein flavor?! The taste of real dark chocolate is heavenly! While we would respectfully argue that your child might actually enjoy a tera’swhey® protein shake, there are many other ways you can incorporate whey protein into your child’s diet.

Perhaps your child is a pancake lover….why not add some tera’swhey® grass fed organic plain protein powder to their pancakes? Stir in some dark chocolate chips…and you have a breakfast that is high in protein, calcium and a host of other important nutrients and even more important, it is delicious! Does your child love muffins? Add tera’swhey® to the dry ingredients of their favorite muffin recipe. They will thank you in hugs and kisses, while you rest easy knowing that your child is getting a protein boost from a most unlikely source.

In the end, tera’swhey® is all about offering healthy alternatives that can be incorporated into a diet balanced with other nutritionally sound choices. Continue to encourage your child to try a variety of food choices…and when in doubt add some tera’swhey® to their favorites until they develop a palette for all the delicious foods this world has to offer.

Here’s a recipe you can try:

Banana Chocolate Chip Power Muffins

Ingredients:

1 scoop tera’swhey® Organic Plain or Bourbon Vanilla Protein Powder

1 large ripe banana

1⁄2 cup applesauce

1 cup oats

2 cups oat flour

4 egg whites

1⁄2 cup plain Greek yogurt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1⁄2 cup chopped dark chocolate pieces or dark chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease or line muffin tins. Using a potato masher, mash bananas until they are an even consistency. Add egg whites and yogurt, continuing to mash until incorporated. Add oats and oat flour and mix thoroughly. Add all remaining ingredients and blend together until the batter is a gooey consistency. If it is too thick add a small amount of water and remix until desired texture is achieved.

Add two heaping spoons of batter to each muffin cup (cups should be about 1/3 to 1⁄2 full). Bake muffins for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Yields 12 medium sized muffins.

A few weeks ago we had one such moment, but this time it wasn’t a face to face encounter. Imagine how thrilled and surprised we were as we watched the October 8 episode of The Doctors here on our local Madison, Wisconsin ABC affiliate, when we saw Aisha Tyler (host of The Talk) promote our product as one way she stays young. Tyler shared a recipe with the Doctors and their viewers that contained none other than the tera’swhey® Fair Trade Dark Chocolate whey protein powder. The clip below shows the entire segment.

After the show, we were able to reach out to Aisha via our tera’swhey® Twitter account and were so excited to hear her passion for our products when she tweeted – “Ooh! I super heart @teraswhey! I drink it every day! You guys are awesome.”

The long and the short of this blog post is that we are blessed to impact the lives of so many different people with tera’swhey® – Hollywood celebrity or stay at home mom…they are all important to us! The bottom line is that we are passionate about good health and all the benefits of our super pure tera’swhey® protein powders. Our goal is to make sure that we reach as many people with this message as possible…and we’d have to say, that a spot on national television was a giant step in that direction!

One of the most common questions we get here at teraswhey® is what are the benefits of whey protein versus other protein sources. So in today’s blog, we thought we would address this question and help you understand why we are so passionate about our whey protein powder.

The best sources of protein are those that can be absorbed most efficiently by the body. This efficiency is measured by the scientific term, biological value or BV. In a nutshell the higher the BV is, the more efficient, or beneficial the protein source. As a point of comparison, beef, which is one of the most common protein sources, has a BV of about 75, while egg protein is approximately 100. When you compare these heavy hitters to the BV in whey protein, which can be as high as 170, it is very clear why it is such an excellent protein source.

The quality of a protein source is also measured by its amino acid profile. This profile determines what percentage of amino acids a protein contains in comparison to the percentage needed by the body. Whey protein again rises to the top of the protein heap in this category, providing 100 percent of the required amino acids.

While having a high absorption level and offering 100 percent of the body’s amino acid requirements certainly puts whey protein in an elite status, there is one other factor that makes it a protein super power. Because whey protein powder is digested in a liquid form, it is absorbed very quickly by the body. This means that the all the nutrients needed for health as well as recovery are provided almost immediately.

Of course, we are not against a delicious piece of steak or grilled chicken, however, when it comes to the best of the best, teraswhey®whey protein powder delivers just what your body needs at just the right time. So why whey protein versus other protein…we say – why not?

-be well, be vibrant

At tera’swhey®, we offer customers three different whey protein options, each with their own unique health benefits. Quite often we are asked the benefits of one versus the other – specifically, goat’s whey versus cow’s whey.

In answer to this question, the first thing we remind the customer is that all tera’swhey® protein powders are created from the highest quality most natural ingredients, utilizing whey protein sourced from local artisan cheese makers. We also tell them that we are the 1st complete line of USDA certified organic protein powders and one of only a handful of goat whey protein powder producers worldwide.

Both goat’s whey and cow’s whey have their own special properties, each beneficial in their own way. For example, goat’s whey is often easier to digest for individuals with lactose intolerances or other milk related allergies. We also point out that both goat and cow’s whey are excellent sources of protein, calcium and other nutritional needs. And, tera’swhey® offer’s consumers a variety of delicious options in both goat’s and cow’s whey formulations.

Our traditional cow’s whey formulations come in both USDA certified organic and rBGH Free options and include delicious flavors such as Bourbon Vanilla, Fair Trade Dark Chocolate, Organic Coffee and rBGH Free Tart Cherry. Our Goat’s whey options include Pomegranate Cranberry and a versatile plain flavor, perfect for creating unique flavor combinations by adding your own fresh ingredients.

So how do we respond when the consumer asks, “Which one is best for me?” If there are no lactose or milk allergies, we often recommend that they try them both and let their taste buds decide. The bottom line is that tera’swhey® offers a variety of delicious and nutritious whey protein powder options, so there is sure to be something for everyone.
